Welcome to the United States and the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt)!
The Office of International Services (OIS) is pleased to offer escorted trips to the Social Security Administration (SSA) office in East Liberty for newly arrived international students and scholars who are eligible to apply for a Social Security Number.
An Immigration Specialist in OIS will meet you at 8am in the William Pitt Union (exact location will be posted in advance at http://www.ois.pitt.edu/intlprogramming/index.html) on the designated date (due to possible delays in the information sharing system between the US Department of Homeland Security and the US Social Security Administration, you should not sign up for a trip or otherwise apply for a Social Security card until you have been in the US at least 10 days). The Immigration Specialist will review all of your application materials and supporting documents to ensure they are ready for submission. The Immigration Specialist will then escort you to the SSA office aboard city bus transportation, will remain to assist with any problems, and will direct you in terms of how to make your way back to Pitt on your own.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before signing up for a trip, please go to http://www.ois.pitt.edu/pdf/SSNInfo.pdf and review the eligibility requirements and the application process for obtaining a Social Security Number, including what documents are required. PLEASE READ THIS VERY CAREFULLY. Once you have determined that you are eligible and have gathered all required documentation, including the Application for a Social Security Card (download at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.html) and a letter from OIS (if required), you may sign up for one of the trips to the Social Security Administration office.
